Riverside Days cool, but successful
Springfield celebrated Riverside Days in grand style over the weekend despite weather that was more like September than June. Although clouds threatened rain several times from Thursday throughout Sunday, it didn’t rain on our parades nor any of the many outdoor activities, most which were held in Riverside Park.
Attendance was down a bit at several events, no doubt because of the cool weather, but overall was favorable.
The temperature and cool breezes early Saturday were perfect for the 5K Fun Run/Walk sponsored by Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield. One hundred thirty-two people registered and 26 of those participants were under age 18 years. Those who registered from the farthest distance were from Texas and Virginia and, no doubt, were in Springfield visiting relatives during summer vacations and found Riverside Days a perfect time to visit.
Double pages of pictures of Riverside Days events can be found on pages 6 and 7 in this newspaper and stories of the Medallion Hunt, Fun Run/Walk, the Kids’ Fishing Derby, and Sunday’s baseball game that was a special event that honored former Tiger and professional ballplayer Brent Weber can be found elsewhere in this newspaper.
A Duck Derby was conducted as a fundraiser to help finance the Kids Party in the Park. The first five ducks to swim across the finish line earn $160 in Springfield Bucks for their “owners.” The winning numbers are posted as follows: first No. 032, $100; second No. 003 $75; third No. 220 $50; fourth No. 126 $25; and fifth No. 104 $10. To claim your prize, please call Rachelle Halvorson at 507-227-7090, by end of business on Monday, July 3, 2017. Must present your ticket to claim the prize.
