We must maintain and improve says retiring mayor

“I look at what we have in Springfield — it’s exceptional,” said Mayor Mark Brown as he wrapped up business on the Springfield City Council agenda the evening of December 20 and retired after 19 years  — 16 years as mayor.

“It’s been interesting and educational,” he remarked as he expressed his thanks and appreciation to fellow councilors, city staff and the many people who serve on various commissions and committees.

Two decades in city government has changed his way of thinking.

“It’s completely different from the day I started,” he said during a recent interview.  “When I first got on the council, I thought, let’s not spend money on this, let’s not spend money on that, let’s keep things the way they are.  In reality, over the years I’ve learned that we must maintain and improve to keep our community viable.”
