Cyril Helget

Mass of Christian Burial for Cyril Helget, 81, of Comfrey, was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Comfrey with the Rev. Andy Michels officiating.   Interment was in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Helget died on Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield.

Cyril Joseph Helget was born on Jan. 8, 1936, to Joseph Jr. and Loretta (Mathiowetz) Helget in Comfrey. He attended and graduated from Comfrey High School. On June 10, 1959, Cyril was united in marriage to Arlene Flor at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springfield. Cyril farmed throughout his life, being dairy farmers until 1993. He then continued crop farming alongside his son, Steve, for the last 24 years, and grandson, Tori, joined in the last three years.

Cyril served many years in the National Guard. He was involved with the Comfrey Lions and was an active member of St. Paul Catholic Church. He enjoyed mowing grass, planting potatoes, listening to old time music, watching sports – especially the Vikings; and in his younger years he played with the Mulligan Baseball team, vacationing, and shaking dice in the afternoon and morning coffee. Spending time with his grandchildren and attending their various activities were very important to Cyril. 

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Comfrey; children, Doug (Jackie) Helget of New Ulm, Steve “Davis” (Chris) Helget of Springfield, Tom (Wendy) Helget of Byron; and Barb (Jose) Nunez of Modesto, Calif; 10 grandchildren, Derek, Collin, Jenna, Kalley, Tori, Alec, Alexis, Ashley, Adrianna, and Miguel; siblings, Ron (Bernetta) Helget of Comfrey, Myron (Marion) Shakopee, Arlys (Ray) Fell of Waseca, Jim Helget of Rochester, and Mary Ann (Roger) Merritt of Freeborn. Cyril was preceded in death by his parents, and infant daughter.
