Funeral services for Florence Torkelson, 95, of St. James were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 30, at East Sveadahl Lutheran Church, rural St. James, with Rev. Kathleen Ulland-Klinkner officiating. Burial was in the East Sveadahl Lutheran Cemetery.
Mrs. Torkelson died on Thursday, December 25, 2014, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James.
Florence was born to Edna and Frank Forsyth on April 10, 1919, in the Forsyth livery building in St. James, Minnesota. She graduated from St. James High School and then Gustavus Adolphus College in 1941. Florence taught high school English for several years before she married Marvin Torkelson on March 30, 1947. They moved onto Florence's family farm where they raised livestock, crops and boys. He preceded her in death in 1977.
Florence was a life-long active member of East Sveadahl Lutheran Church in St. James where she was baptized, confirmed, married and also served as church organist for many years. Florence loved her life as a wife, mother, homemaker and gardener, and was especially proud of her granddaughters, Britta Torkelson of St. Paul, Annika Torkelson of Minneapolis, Kristen Wilson of Oklahoma City, OK and Katie Lane of Fort Worth, Texas.
Florence is survived by her sister Frances; brother Donald; sons Bruce Torkelson, wife Natalie and their daughters Kristen and husband Jarrett and Katie and husband Jonathan, and Paul Torkelson, wife Cindy and their daughters Annika and partner Gita Varner, and Britta and partner Andrew Wilson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marvin; and brothers, Leslie and Milton.
Memorials to East Sveadahl Lutheran Church for refurbishing the organ, or to the Good Samaritan Society in St. James, are preferred in lieu of flowers.
