George Cowman was born on January 27, 1942, in Brainerd to Wilber and Bertha Cowman. He graduated from Brainerd High School and what was then called Moorhead State College, where he received a B. S. degree in Math and Physics. Later, he also attained 135 more credits in Physics and Computer Science. At MS, he belonged to the local fraternity Kappa Nu Alpha and the first fraternity to go national on campus-Iota Epsilon chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He was honored to be the first name on the charter.
August 29, 1964, he married Sharon Melby at the Hamar Church in Rothsay, Minn. They moved to Springfield, where they lived for 44 years. George taught Algebra, Physics, and Computer Science, retiring after 24 years due to Parkinson’s disease.
George was active at St. Johns Lutheran Church (choir, teaching Sunday School, and elected Deacon twice); Boy Scouts; Zenith Lodge 200 and Gideons International. He also enjoyed hunting, golfing, reading mysteries, and refinishing antique furniture.
George especially loved his 41 years at Nest Lake and their retirement home at West Norway Lake fishing with family and enjoying long walks and watching the wildlife.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; children Dean (Maria), Daniel (Marcie), and Deborah (Patrick) Watje; grandchildren, John and Anna Cowman, Isabelle and Adeline Watje; brother, Bill Cowman (Joyce). His parents, and his brothers, James and Richard, preceded him in death.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Andover on May 31, 2019, with visitation at 9:30, Service at 10:30, and lunch to follow.
Blessed be his memory.
