Mass of Christian Burial for George J. Roiger, 93, was conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at St. Raphael Catholic Church with The Rev. Phil Schotzko officiating.  Interment was in St. Raphael Cemetery. 

Mr. Roiger died on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. 

George Joseph Roiger was born on May 23, 1923, in Springfield, Brown County, Minnesota, to John and Elizabeth (Schneider) Roiger. He attended school in Springfield and was a member of the United States Army Signal Corp and served during World War II in Italy. On August 27, 1949, he was united in marriage to Frieda Kaul in Springfield; and they celebrated 65 years of marriage. George worked for Bright’s Service Station, the P&M Market, and Tauer’s Super Valu. George loved spending time with his family, and his love for gardening, especially puttering in his yard and large garden, playing old time music with friends and relatives, fishing, playing cards, delivering meals on wheels, and the many summer trips to Northern Minnesota. He was a fan of all Minnesota Sports teams mainly the Twins. He was a lifelong member of St. Raphael Catholic Church where in his younger years he sang in the choir, John Watson Post 257 American Legion, and the VFW. George loved people and people loved George, a friendly and outgoing man who was always in a happy mood. He was one of a kind who will be greatly missed by his family.

George is survived by sons and daughters, Charles (Vicki) Roiger, Kathryn (Nicholas) Highland, Gretchen Roiger, Michael Roiger, Susan (Robert) Newman, and Heidi (Patrick) Linder; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frieda; brothers, Adolph, Albert and Joseph; sisters, Anna Margaret Steffel, Elizabeth Jenniges Sorenson, Frances Scherer and Marie Ochs Wertisch. George is also survived by his caring family of friends at Oak Hills Living Center.
