James Turbes

 

James J. Turbes, 89, died on Saturday, August 1, 2015, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 7, at St. Raphael Catholic Church with the Rev. Phil Schotzko officiating.  Interment will be at the St. Raphael Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 6, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield Chapel and will continue at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.  Parish prayer service will be at 4:00 Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home.

James John Turbes was born August 5, 1925, to Hubert and Mary (Grausam) Turbes on the family farm in rural Springfield. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1945. On November 12, 1960, Jim was united in marriage to Cyrilla Fischer at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springfield. The couple farmed in Brookville Township, where Jim had lived since he was born. They retired in the fall of 1985. The couple then moved to Grand Rapids for several years and enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening and visiting with friends. The couple moved back to Springfield in 1988 and in March of 2013, they moved to Countryside Assisted Living in Sleepy Eye. Jim and Cyrilla enjoyed traveling, especially several trips to Branson and a trip to Alaska, card playing and visiting with relatives and friends. He loved time with his granddaughters who called him “Papa Wee.” He was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Springfield American Legion. 

He is survived by daughters, Patricia (Ken) Hemmingsen and Jean (Nick) Frank; granddaughters, Shari (Caleb Hayes) and Alison; many nieces and nephews and special cousin, Joan Grausam. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife Cyrilla in April 2013; brothers, Leo (Myrtle), Ed (Emma), Florian (Gertrude), Matt (Eleanor), George (Mary), Raymond (Annabelle), Vesty (Myrtle), Vic (Doris); and sister Loretta (Ted) Wenisch.
