Jean (Garvin) Baynes
Jean (Garvin) Baynes passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 23, 2021. Jean was born December 12, 1937 to Harold and Pearl Garvin in St. Peter, MN. She attended St. Peter Public School and graduated in 1955. Following high school she moved to Minneapolis and worked as an executive secretary for Napco Industries. After her marriage to the love of her life, Jack Baynes, the couple moved to Corpus Christi, TX while Jack finished his years in the Navy. After returning to Minnesota the two of them worked together side by side in their State Farm agency for more than 30 years. Jack liked to say he did the selling and Jean took care of everything else. They had the chance to travel many places over the years, but, Jean’s favorite place was their cabin on Big Birch Lake in Hackensack, MN. The family shared many good times at the lake.
Jean loved spending time with her family. She loved to play games with her kids and grandkids and all the laughs that brought. She loved doing crafts with the grandkids. She loved to make a big meal for every holiday and was happiest when surrounded by family. She was the sweetest and kindest Mom and Grandma.
Jean was a very creative person who could sew, knit and crochet. She loved to decorate, wallpaper and refinish furniture. She also loved to golf back in the day. She could hit the heck out of those drives!
Jean was a volunteer long before it became trendy to volunteer. Jean volunteered in her community by helping with Meals on Wheels and taking part in Church and school activities. She had a special place in her heart for helping the elderly and often helped people with taxes, insurance questions and Medicare paperwork. She never wanted to see anyone struggle.
Jean is survived by her loving husband, Jack; children Shannon (Mike) Nuy, Colleen (Eric) Hass, Tom (Joean) Baynes and Joan (Jeff) Scharmer. She was a loving Grandma to Laura Nuy, E.J. (Matthew) Lee, Alex Nuy, Katelyn Scharmer, Hannah Hass and Ian Hass. She was also blessed with three great-grandsons; Teddy, Beau and Freddie Lee. She is also survived by Sisters Joan Garvin and Maxine Brown as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Pearl Garvin, Brother Harold Garvin, Jack’s parents Rose and Matt Baynes and Jack’s siblings. She will be dearly missed by her family.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 112 W Van Dusen St, Springfield, MN at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11 with visitation starting one hour before. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
