He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy in 2020; his parents; a granddaughter, Katie Peters; and a niece, Bethany Dahl.

Layton Gene Peters was born on August 5, 1928 in Willow River, MN to Frank & Ferne (Cole) Peters. He graduated from Humboldt High School in St. Paul in 1946, and then was discharged from the United States Signal Corps in 1949. Layton attended the University of Minnesota -St. Paul, graduating in 1953, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, and later received his Master’s Degree of Science from the U of M St. Paul in 1967. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Jueneman on October 16, 1954, at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn; a union which blessed the couple with a son and a daughter.  Layton started his teaching career in Sanborn, MN, from 1953 to 1968, where the chapter was awarded the Superior Chapter 12 consecutive years, producing over 23 State Farmer Degrees and two American Farmer Degrees in the FFA Chapter. In 1968, he moved to New Ulm and became co- advisor of the New Ulm Ag Department which rose to the 4th largest chapter nationally, producing 5 American Farmer Degrees, 1 National Star Dairy Farmer, 54 State Farmer Degrees, 1 State Star Farmer, 1 State Star Agribusiness man, 2 State Star Farmers, 3 Regional Star Farmers, and 4 State FFA officers in his tenure. Layton always felt that his teaching career was not about his success, but the success of his students. He was most proud of the fact that he had two students from Sanborn who continued on to become vocational ag teachers and FFA ag advisors in Minnesota, and one from New Ulm who became a vo-ag teacher and FFA advisor, the ultimate compliment. After his retirement from teaching and head of the Adult Farmer Management Program, he helped the Diocese of New Ulm Farm Crisis program. He was an active member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, American Legion, Concord Singers, Turner Hall, and a charter member of the New Ulm FFA Alumni Organization and President of the National VoAg Instructors Association.
