Leonard “Skip” Berberich

 

Leonard "Skip" Berberich, age 81, of Springfield,MN and formerly of Comfrey, MN died on February 1, 2022, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. 

Visitation will be on Saturday, February 12, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey, MN. 

Service will be held at the St. Paul's Catholic Church on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. 

The clergy will be Father Mark Steffl. Interment will be at the St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in Comfrey, MN.

Leonard "Skip" Berberich, Jr. was born to Leonard and Alma (Baier) Berberich on June 27, 1940 on the family farm in Mulligan Township near Comfrey, MN. He attended country school in Mulligan Township and graduated from Comfrey High School in 1957. In high school, Skip was the football quarterback. Skip served in the US Marines where he did his basic training in Paris Island, SC. He then returned home to farm and milk cows. On December 28, 1961, Leonard was united in marriage to Margaret Hageman at New Ulm Cathedral Church. Skip drove gas truck for Tri-County Co-Op and from 1973-1979 he served as the manager. He then returned to farming and semi-retired in 2012. For over 30 years Skip raised peas and sweet corn for Del Monte. He was generous with his crop to many neighbors and friends. In 2011, Margaret and Skip moved to Comfrey and after Margaret's death, Skip moved to the Maples in Springfield. Skip loved animals especially pigs, peacocks, horses, chickens, guineas, ducks, and geese. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and loved the time he spent on the farm. Skip was known for his huge smile and a wave to everyone he met. He loved watching sports and especially watching his sons Tim and Tom and grandsons play sports. Skip enjoyed listening to Polka music. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church where he served on the council and was a lector for over 40 years, Knights of Columbus, Darfur Sportsman Club, Mulligan Township board, and Albin Johnson American Legion Post #244.

Skip loved and left behind his family - Tammy (Jimmy) Jones of Andover, Tim (Lynne) of Sioux Falls, and Tom (Michelle) of Springfield; grandchildren- Cacey (Danny) Barrett, Amanda, Shayna, Sarah, Brett, and Jason; great grandchildren - Sawyer, Kamdon, Shane, and Kalen; sisters-in-law Karen Stanley and LaDonna Berberich; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret of 54 years, son Tracey, sisters - Beatta "Tatty" (Wesley) Mickelson and Donna (Wendell) Stark, brother Bernard (Marlys) Berberich, sister-in-law Karol Schachtele, and brother-in-law Jerry Stanley.
