Lula Marz

Lula H. Marz, 94, of Springfield, died on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Home.

Mass of Christian Burial following visitation  was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 2, at St. Raphael Catholic Church. The Rev. Phil Schotzko officiated at services.  Interment was in St. Raphael Cemetery.

Lula Helena Marz was born on Feb. 20, 1924, to John and Susan (Cullen) Schunk in Comfrey. She attended and graduated from school in Comfrey. On Nov. 26, 1947, Lula was united in marriage to Alfred Marz. Lula worked in the nursing field her entire life starting right after high school, starting at the old St. John’s Hospital, Springfield Community Hospital, and then St. John Lutheran Home. She never attended nursing school but received her LPN license in 1972. Lula was a wonderful and loving mom and grandma and loved to be with her family especially during the holidays. She was an active member of St. Raphael Catholic Church and loved to volunteer at St. John
Lutheran Home. Lula loved to can (a little of everything), sew, crochet, garden, and going to rummage sales and auctions, and listening to KNUJ radio. She enjoyed baking, especially around Christmas time when she made
dozens of assorted cookies and the whole family would bring their containers to fill. She also loved to fish bullheads with Alfred, but they always fished out of separate boats because Alfred fished northerns and then he was
always there to pull her boat out if she got stuck.

She is survived by her children, Betty (Dave) Frost, Mary (Ron) Mathiowetz, and Carol (John) German; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Lula was preceded in death by her parents, John and Susan Schunk; husband, Alfred; sister Neola “PeeWee” Amsden; brother, Stanley Schunk; and granddaughter, Kami Jo Jackson.

Sturm Funeral Home was entrusted with funeral arrangements. Online condolences for the family may be left
