Michael ‘Mike’ Roiger

Michael John “Mike” Roiger, 61, of Kimball, S.D., passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016, at home of natural causes. Funeral Mass was conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball with The Rev. Andrew Swietochowski officiating. A Committal Service followed at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Brewster. 

Michael John Roiger was born on October 18, 1954, to Roman and Marjorie (Fiedler) Roiger in New Ulm, Brown County, Minnesota. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1972.  He was united in marriage to Norma J. Starner on August 29, 1992,in Gary, S.D.  Mike trucked and farmed for many years in Minnesota and South Dakota. In 2009 they moved to Kimball, S.D. where he was employed with Ed and Leanne Havlik for the past seven years. He attended St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball.   

Mike enjoyed farming, working with cows and calves, collecting toy tractors and reading – particularly farm magazines and newspapers. Mike will be remembered as a loving husband and father. He loved his family most of all and especially liked to give his grandchildren a “hard” time.

Grateful for having shared in Mike’s life: his wife of more than 23 years, Norma Roiger of Kimball, S.D.; two daughters, Lisa (Glen) Hoffmann and Debbie (Tim) Nelson, all of New Ulm; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his father, Roman Roiger of Springfield; two sisters: Ramona Reinhart and Carol Kerkhoff, both of Redwood Falls; a brother, Steve Roiger of Sanborn; a sister-in-law, Pat Henkels of Lake Lillian; two brothers-in-law, Bob (Tami) Starner of Brewster, and Jim Starner (friend, Nancy Kelly) of Westbrook; along with nine nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Marge; a sister, Rita (Garth) Jensen; mother and father-in-law, Catherine and LeRoy Starner; and two brothers-in-law, Hank Reinhart and Nick Henkels.
