Patrick "Pat" Maloney

Patrick “Pat” Maloney, 87, of Dothan, Alabama, formerly of Decorah, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at the Southeast Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama.

   Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., today (Wednesday, December 17), at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 307 West Main Street, Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phil Gibbs presiding.  Burial will be in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa. Friends may call at the church for one hour before Mass.

   Patrick Donald Maloney was born on March 17, 1927, the son of Paul James and Gladys (Cowell) Maloney in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  Pat attended Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1945, in Aberdeen, S.D.  While in high school, Pat started his career in journalism at the age of 15 when he served as the sports editor of the Aberdeen American News, during World War II.  He then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism.  He worked at the Springfield Advance-Press in Springfield, Minnesota, and this is where he met his future wife, Collette. He was united in marriage to Collette Engelen on July 5, 1951, in Springfield, and to this union six children were born: Kathleen, Barbara, Mary, Michael, James and Peggy.  After he was married he served in the U.S. Army. He returned to Springfield, and later moved to Owatonna, Minnesota, to work at the Photo News as editor from 1958-68.  In 1968, they moved to Decorah, where Pat served as the managing editor of the Decorah Newspaper until 1992. Pat was married to Nancy Glenn Wilson on August 25, 1986, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. After his retirement, he still contributed to the Decorah Newspaper for several years, as well as traveling to Arizona and Alabama.  Pat enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and pheasant hunting.  He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and was a Lions Club member for over 40 years.  Above all, Pat loved his family and was so proud of his grandchildren.

   Pat is survived by his wife, Nancy Maloney, Dothan, Ala.; and his five children: Kathy Maloney Loomis, Davenport, Iowa; Barbara (Kim) Graham, Minden, Nev.; Mary (Peter Tarpey) Maloney, Des Moines, Iowa;  James (Julie) Maloney, Decorah, Iowa; and Peggy (Scott) Klein, Minnetonka.  Also surviving are grandchildren, Ryan and Nick Loomis, Robin (Andy Johnson) Fisher, Jill Fisher, Megan and Michael Tarpey, Nathan Maloney, Alex “AJ”, Lauren and Jacob “Jake” Klein;  one great-grandson, Dominic “Nico” Loomis;  Nancy’s three children, Seth (Terry) Wilson, Riverside, Calif.; Susan (Rick) Vierkandt, Dothan, Ala; and Liza (Mark) Klokow, Oconomowoc, Wis.; Nancy’s grandchildren,  Lauren (Nathan) Overton, Trey Wilson, Tim (Laura) Vierkandt, Sean Vierkandt, Taylor and Riley Klokow;  Nancy’s great-grandchildren, Margot Overton, Lily and Colin Vierkandt and Reagan Vierkandt. Also surviving are two brothers, Dennis (Marilyn) Maloney, Aberdeen, S.D., and Paul J. (Kathie) Maloney, Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.; one sister-in-law, Mary Engelen, Minnesota; one brother-in-law, Harold “Stu” Stewart, Rochester, Minn.; along with several nieces and nephews. 

  Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Paul James and Gladys (Cowell) Maloney; His wife, Collette (Engelen) Maloney on Dec. 25, 1983; one son, Michael Maloney on Feb. 3, 1996; one sister-in-law, Carole Maloney; a nephew, Kevin Maloney; Collette’s parents, Bernard John and Veronica Engelen; Collette’s four siblings, Bernard John “BJ” Engelen, Marcella Engelen, Theodore Engelen and Beatrice “Bix” Stewart.
