Richard Steenhoven

Richard Steenhoven, 74, of Bovey, formerly of Springfield, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at Seasons Hospice in Redwood Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 29, at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springfield with the Rev. Phil Schotzko officiating. Interment will be at the St. Raphael Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 today (Wednesday, January 28) at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield Chapel, and will continue Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Raphael Church.

Richard L. Steenhoven, Sr. was born December 15, 1940, in New Ulm, Brown County, Minnesota, the son of John R. and Arline (Schilling) Steenhoven. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springfield where he also attended grade school. Richard graduated from Springfield High School and continued his education at St. John's University, University of St. Thomas, and Mankato State where he earned his bachelor of science degree in Chemistry. He married Jeanette Sturm at Immaculate Conception Church in Butternut, Wisconsin, on February. 8, 1964. He went to work as a salesman at Steenhoven's Implement in Springfield until 1988 when he moved to Walker in 1988 where he and his wife operated a supper club, Wanderers Inn, until 1995. During that period of time, Richard earned his Minnesota Real Estate license. The couple then moved to Grand Rapids, where Richard continued selling real estate and also worked for L&M Fleet. Richard was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed playing piano and singing a several area parishes including Mary Immaculate of Coleraine, where he was a member. He also sang in the Blandin Male Chorus for a number of years. Richard enjoyed fishing, playing pool and cards. He cherished time spent with family. Richard relished music so much that he started the Dickey-Do's, The Family Tradition, and The Wanderers bands over the years. He especially enjoyed the company of his dog, Buddy.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Morton; daughters, Rene' (Jeff) Wold of Penguilly, Kendra (Robert) Boney of Springfield, and Jennifer (Lonnie) Quackenbush of Morton; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother John; son Richard, Jr.; and grandson, Bryan Geiger.
