Roger Vanderwerf, 70, of Springfield, died July 13, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Funeral Service was held Monday, July 18, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church.  Pastor Tricia Mattson officiated and interment was in the Springfield City Cemetery.  Arrangements were with the Sturm Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.

Roger John Vanderwerf was born on February 20, 1946, in Springfield, the son of William and Dena Vanderwerf.  He attended Springfield High School and graduated in 1966.  He was united in marriage to Barb Polzin on August 12, 1967, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield.  Roger worked for Sanborn Manufacturing, retiring after 42 years. Following his retirement, Roger worked detailing cars and at Expressway where he stocked shelves and enjoyed visiting and greeting people.  He served on the Springfield AA group as a Leader for 33 years where he helped many people around the area with addiction and personal issues.  Roger enjoyed being with people, listening, and spending time with family - especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife - Barb of Springfield; children - Guy of Storden, Lena (Dan) Schmitz of Roberts, WI, and Layne (Jennie) of Comfrey; grandchildren - Tessa Sedin, Trever Vanderwerf, Chassidy Vanderwerf, Noah Schmitz. Alexa Schmitz, Gavin Vanderwerf, and Brianna Schmitz; siblings - Elsie Schwartz of Springfield, Robert (Marlys) Vanderwerf of Springfield, Lester (Marion) Vanderwerf of Springfield; and a sister-in-law - Elizabeth Vanderwerf of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Pete Vanderwerf.
