Sylvester ‘Sonny’ Vogel

Funeral service for Sylvester “Sonny” Vogel, 84, was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 28, at St. Raphael Catholic Church with The Rev. Phil Schotzko officiating. Interment was in St. Raphael Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Vogel died on Thursday, September 24, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield.

Sylvester Frank Vogel was born on February 21, 1931, to William and Philomena (Matzke) Vogel in Stately Township, Brown County, Minnesota. After his schooling, Sonny worked at Vigorena Feeds. He was united in marriage to Arlene Rosenau on September 30, 1961, at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springfield. After marriage, the couple moved to the farm and farmed for 12 years and he also managed the Eastside Bar for 23 years. After retirement, he worked at the airport. Sonny enjoyed playing cards at the airport and at the kitchen table, his hobby farm, loved his cattle, peacocks, deer, chicken, and pigeons, country driving and sightseeing. He especially loved his time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the St. Raphael Catholic Church. 

He is survived by wife Arlene; daughter Bonnie and children Nita and Hana, daughter Doreen (Jeff) Christensen and children Dan, Emily and Cole, daughter Julie (Tim) Gramentz and children Josh and Allissa (Billy Cook); son Jon (Elaine) and children Lindsay (Cyle Braulick), Jordan (Katlyn) and Lexie, daughter Mary (Jim) Simonson and children Chase and Haley; siblings, Eleanor Teicher, Wenzel Vogel and Ernest (Nancy) Vogel; in-laws, Eileen Vogel, Elmer Meine and Alvin Wille. He was preceded in death by siblings, Christine Wille, Rose Meine, William Vogel, Jr., Swede, and Lowell Halvorson; and nieces and nephews.
