Vernon 'Bing' Thordsen

Vernon 'Bing' Tordsen, 70, of Springfield died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014, at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Luther Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Springfield City Cemetery with military honors by John Watson American Legion Post 257.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 3),  at the Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield Chapel, and will continue on Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.

Vernon 'Bing' Edward Tordsen was born Nov. 25, 1944, in Comfrey, to Arthur and Martha (Stern) Tordsen. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1962 and began working for Ochs Brick and Tile. Bing served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967. He was an expert marksman and received the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his honorable discharge, Bing returned to Springfield and continued to work for Och's Brick and Tile. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield and John Watson American Legion Post 257. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening and loved growing roses.

He is survived by son, Michael Tordsen; brother, Bob Tordsen and wife Karen of Brownton; sister Lynn and husband Jack Mueller of Mankato; sister-in-law, Nancy Tordsen of Lamberton; four nieces; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Glen and Eugene; and his companion of 39 years, Susan Larson.

Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
