Virginia Matzke

Virginia Matzke, 86, of Lamberton, died Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Valley View Manor Care Center in Lamberton.

Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 24, in the United Methodist Church in Lamberton with Pastor Kirk Doering officiating.   Interment was in the Lamberton Cemetery.

Virginia Kersten was born April 8, 1931, to Albert and Ella (Howe) Kersten, Springfield, Brown County, Minnesota.  She graduated from Springfield Public School and attended one year of college at Mankato. On August 15, 1950, she was united in marriage to Maynard Matzke. They made their home, farmed and raised their family in Germantown township, rural Lamberton. They retired and moved into Lamberton in 1985. Virginia worked as an Avon representative, a florist in Lamberton and Wabasso, and a long-time employee of Valley View Manor as a nurses aid and in activities.  Virginia was a member of Lamberton UMC and a former member of the Germantown EUB church where she actively served as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and in Ladies Aid. She helped her community and her children as a 4-H leader. She enjoyed flower gardening, arranging flowers, crafts, baking, traveling out west with Maynard, and supporting her children and grandchildren by attending their events.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Patti and Glen Mathiason of Walnut Grove, Greg and Karen Matzke of Hastings, Michael and Caroline Matzke of Otsego, Brian and Pam Matzke of Buffalo,and Beth Ragland of Nashville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Jennifer (Pat), Paul (Angela), Lucas (Katie), Alix (Dillion), Jared, Tayler, Lauren, Abigale, Brianna, Brittani, Brady, Brytan, and Kersten; three great-grandchildren, Ben, Caleb, Luke, and a great-granddaughter on the way;  sister Carol Gode of Lamberton; and sister-in-law, Shirley Matzke of Apache Junction, Arizona. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Maynard, in 2000; and sister, Marjorie Sandmann, this year.
