Walter John Meine, 88, of Springfield, died on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 15, at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Josh Doughty and Chaplain Noel Wetter officiating.  Interment will be in the Springfield City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. today (Wednesday, September 14) at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield and will continue on Thursday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of services

Walter John Meine was born on April 21, 1928, the son of Ernest and Mary (Renner) Meine on a farm south of Springfield. At the age of eight, the family moved to Springfield where his parents started a greenhouse business. Walter attended Springfield Public School and helped his family operate the greenhouse and truck gardening business. On June 23, 1951, he married Fern Kirschstein and together they operated the Springfield Greenhouse until 1971. He then worked as a plumber and sprinkler fitter until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Springfield Fire Department for 23 years and was the assistant chief for five years until his retirement in 1984. Walter was a Cub Master when his sons were in Cub Scouts. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Springfield and served as an usher. Walter enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, traveling throughout the United States, playing cards, puzzles, gardening, trips out to the farm, and listening and dancing to old time music. He especially enjoyed visiting with family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Fern of Springfield; children, Douglas (Mary) Meine of Rochester, Tony (Lynn) Meine of Rochester, Ronald (Kayla) Meine of Clements, and John (Marsha) Meine of Rogers; grandchildren, Laura Meine (John Wiedenhoeft), Joe Meine, Lisa Meine, Roxy (Joe) Korkemeier, Renee (Mike) Bennett, Kyle Meine, Courtney Meine, and Jennifer Meine; great-grandchildren, Grady, Harper, and Reed Korkemeier; brother, Elmer Meine; sister-in-law, Agnes Meine; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edward Meine; sisters, Laura Schnobrich, Rose Rambow, Gertrude Wilhite, Esther Jenkins, and Frieda Meine; sisters-in-law, Rose Meine and Rose Lee; brothers-in-law, Frank Schnobrich, Don Wilhite, Erv Rambow, and Ken Lee.
