FFA scores well in Region VI Crops, Farm Business Management, and Employment Skills

On Tuesday, March 10, Springfield FFA members competed in the Region VI Crops, Farm Business Management, and Employment Skills Interviews at Minnesota West Campus in Jackson.

The Crops team placed third and will be advancing to the state competition. Senior Jake Rosenstengel placed fourth individually, and Senior Sylvan Tauer placed 9th individually. Jake and Sylvan have competed in the crops contest and qualified for state all four years of their high school career. This year they helped train freshmen Courtlyn Runk and Maddi Wester who have a bright future ahead of them in this contest. The contest includes team members identifying various crops, weeds, seeds, diseases and insects that can be found throughout the Midwest. They also took a written test on agronomy knowledge about corn and alfalfa, performed rain grading  based upon the “Official United States Standards of Grain” handbook, and analyzed problems based on Pesticide, Fertilizer, Varietal Trials.

The Farm Business Management team advanced to state. In this contest, members deal with the analysis of some phases of the organization and/or operation of a farm business and the decisions one might make as a result of the analysis. They take a test that challenges their knowledge of Farm Management and Economic terms, principles, and procedures. They are then provided with data of an actual farm analysis and the area averages that correspond to the chosen farm enterprises and must be able to interpret the information to properly answer questions.

Wyatt Schmidt competed in the Employment Skills contest. Although he did not advance to state, he scored very well compared to many older FFA members doing this contest and has the experience to help him be successful in the contest in the future. In this competition, members must submit a job application, cover letter, and resume for a job at which they would be qualified to work ahead of time. On the contest day, members participate in a person interview and are then required to write a follow-up letter.
