River Valley Speech Team (l to r): Sarah Kottke, Joseph Jensen, Kiera Lafferty, Jace Rosenau, KayLynn Sanderville, Sydne Wahl, Aubree Paplow, Libby Tonn.

River Valley speakers received recognition

This week the speech team had planned to compete virtually in the Luverne tournament.  After realizing this tournament was going to be asynchronous (pre-recorded), the team made a quick switch over to the STMA (St. Michael-Albertville) tournament so they could compete synchronously (live).  This was a very large tournament consisting of around 475 participants from thirty-nine different teams. Due to the large number of participants in this tournament, there were three different final rounds: finals, next-in finals, and merit finals.

Several River Valley speakers received recognition. In drama, Sarah Kottke competed in next-in finals and took second place, while Kendall Kelly placed third in the next-in finals of poetry. KayLynn Sanderville placed fifth in the merit finals of extemporaneous reading. Sydne Wahl competed in the merit finals of drama and placed sixth.  Libby Tonn also received an honorable mention in informative speaking. Next weekend the team will compete asynchronously (pre-recorded videos) at the Adrian tournament. This year’s River Valley Speech team consists of seventeen students from Springfield Public School and is coached by head coach, Darcy Hoyt and assistant coach, Brianna Jensen.
