Goal posts in Sticker Field where Springfield High School athletes are currently practicing football.

First home game is Friday evening, August 31

The Springfield Board of Education, during their regular monthly meeting the evening of August 13, heard reports from school administrators regarding the wrap-up of summer work and the school’s readiness for the 2018-19 academic year that opened Monday.

Board Member Mike Vogel reported on the work done in the Riverside Park Recreation Complex following the July flooding that caused major damage to the ball fields.  The football and baseball fields have been worked up and reseeded, and the new growth is looking good; however, success of the planting is influenced by variable weather, and there will be no play on the fields until optimum turfgrass recovery.

The Tigers’ first football game this season, is a home game with Ortonville Friday evening, Aug. 31.  This game will be played at Sticker Field.  When the Sticker athletic field was developed it was designed with a football field and two softball fields as well as concession stand and rest rooms.

Sticker Field, named for the sandburs — a prickly summers weed that wreck havoc on barefoot kids and puppies, and with tenacious burs that stick to clothing — had long been a community playground with no amenities.  The field was eventually purchased by the Springfield School District and used for athletic practices, track and field day, and summer recreation. From time to time, there were discussions regarding needed improvements in Sticker Field.
