A new era begins...Wrestling team are Tigers again

Springfield High School will once again have its own Tiger wrestling squad this season after being co-oped with River Valley the past few years.  Head Coach Todd Bertram and Assistant Coach Luke Amsden recruited twenty-three wrestlers to be on the local team.  The team began practices November 18.

Wrestling letter winners returning to the team are Owen Bertram, Mason Rummel and Joe Anderson with Bertram and Rummel as captains.  Coach Bertram commented, “I see a lot of young wrestlers having a big impact on this years team.  They include Wyatt Schmidt, Ashtin Johnson, Dan Bryer, Tori Helget, Kadin Johnson, Ashton Danielson and Shane Clemon.”

The Tigers will be in Section 3A and are basically starting over as far a team records are concerned.  Top wrestling teams in the section and conference to watch will be Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut Grove (TMB-WWG), Canby, Jackson County Central (JCC), Minneota and Windom-Mountain Lake.

Bertram and Amsden are happy to have twenty-three wrestlers out for the program, but would like even more to build up the program and to add depth at each weight class.  It will also be very important for the team to stay healthy.

In discussing the team’s strengths, Bertram commented, “I think we have some good middle and upper weights.  I’m very happy with our desire to get better and work hard.  I think our team will improve a great deal as the year goes on.”

The Tigers will have their first meet at Willmar on Friday, December 6.  It will be a new beginning where each wrestler in the program will improve throughout the season with hopes of placing in the section tournament and advancing to the state tournament.
