Springfield wins battle with New Ulm

Springfield 15 – New Ulm 14

It was dramatic evening in Riverside Park as the Tigers matched up against the Brewers resulting in the win the Tigers needed to see state tournament action.

The Tigers rallied from an 11-2 deficit against the New Ulm Brewers with seven runs in the bottom of the 8th to make it 11-9 and after the Brewers picked one up in the top of the ninth, three more in the bottom to send it to extra innings at 12-12.

New Ulm scored in the 11th, but Springfield answered -- although they loaded the bases with no outs and had the potential winning run thrown out at the plate, and that was only the first out! A botched squeeze and a groundout sent the game to the 12th inning, tied at 13 runs each.
New Ulm scored again in the 12th for a 14-13 lead, and Springfield tied it on a double by Alex Fink. With one out and the bases loaded, a strikeout left one more chance. That’s when Cole Milbrath put one in the outfield gap to score the tying and winning run, sending Springfield into the state tournament.
