Tiger Football
The Springfield Tiger varsity football team traveled to Morgan for a matchup with Cedar Mountain-Comfrey last Friday evening, October 14. The Tigers got their first win of the season, defeating the Cougars 28-20 before a large crowd of satisfied Springfield fans. The Tigers had a great first half with Aaron Salonek scoring 2 touchdowns for the Tigers and teammates Ben Runck and Kale Meendering each scoring 1 touchdown. The victory puts the Tiger record at 1-6 as they face Minnesota Valley Lutheran this Wednesday, October 19 at 7 p.m. in Riverside Park. The Tigers played the Cedar Mountain-Comfrey Cougars in Morgan last Friday evening. The Tigers got their first victory of the season by defeating the Cougars 28-20 in the Southwest District, East Subdistrict game.
On Tiger offense, Aaron Salonek had 12 carries good for 126 yards and 1 reception for 8 yards plus 2 touchdowns. Ben Runck had 6 carries good for 51 yards and scored a touchdown while Kale Meendering had 3 carries for 2 yards and 2 receptions for 69 yards plus a touchdown. Teammate Devin Johnson had 9 carries good for 42 yards plus 77 yards passing in the game.
On Tiger defense, Kale Meendering had a total of 25 tackles—8 being solo tackles. Tiger Brett Berberich had 12 tackles followed by Aaron Salonek, Mason Rummel, Ben Runck and Michael Gluth with 9 tackles apiece. Andrew Beckman had 7 tackles and teammates James Ploeger and Curtis Tauer each had 6 tackles. Devin Johnson and Cole Christensen had 5 tackles apiece followed by Ivan Hovland and Jake Veenstra with 4 tackles apiece. Decker Scheffler added 1 tackle for the Tiger victory.
