Girls basketball start practice for this season with Head Coach Dillon Schultz and Assistant Coaches Mike Kelly and Brent Haseleu.

Tiger girls will seize the opportunity this season

Athletes at Springfield High School are gearing up for the winter sports season.  Head Coach Dillon Schultz and Assistant Coaches Mike Kelly and Brent Haseleu started practice with the varsity girls basketball team on November 12 in anticipation of their first game of the season on November 26.  With ten returning letter winners to the squad, the girls hope to improve on their record from last season.  Last year, the team had a 16-9 overall record  and tied for third in the Tomahawk Conference with a 10-6 record.

Returning to the court for the Tigers will be Sydney Hauger, Samantha Richert, Taylor Augustin, Meriah Kirschstein, Courtney Wendt, Cylee Graff, Megan Ploeger, Tori Roiger, Lilly McCone and Maddy Digmann.  Most are returning to key positions on the squad but Coach Schultz commented, “there will be opportunity for some young players to step up and play a good amount.  I can’t wait to find out who wants to take that next step the most.”

Top girls teams in the conference this season are expected to be Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (SESM), Springfield, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (GFW), Wabasso and Minnesota Valley Lutheran (MVL).  In Section 2A, the top teams to look for will be BOLD, SESM, Springfield, Mountain Lake, St. Clair and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (WEM).

The Tiger girls show a lot of versatility and should be able to do a lot of different things on the court.  Schultz commented, “We can play big or small.  Depth may be an issue for us this season, but there are a good amount of young players that will have opportunities to play a lot and earn a spot in the rotation.”

The team will focus on taking one day at a time and continue to improve through the season.  “We have the potential on this team and we will do everything we can to maximize it.  But we can’t get ahead of ourselves.  Each day is a new start and another chance to get better and we have to seize that opportunity,” stated Coach Schultz.

The Tigers will open their season on Tuesday, November 26 at 7:30 p.m. against the Red Rock Central Falcons in Lamberton.
