Tiger wrestlers take 7th in Purple Pride tournament
The Tiger wrestling team hosted a home quad with Canby, Norwood Young America and New Ulm last Tuesday. This was the last dual event of the year for the Tigers. There was a large crowd on hand to watch the event and the Tigers wrestled very well, going 1-2 on the night.
Springfield 32-Canby 48
The Tigers opened up with section rival and state-ranked Canby. The Tigers won six matches, three by pin. Wyatt Schmidt, Joe Anderson and Kadin Johnson recorded the pins. The Tigers forfeited four weights but won five of the nine weights that wrestled.
Springfield 42-Norwood Young America 24
In the second dual of the night, the Tigers won eight of the twelve matches to cruise to a Tiger victory. Owen Bertram, Ethan Langseth, Kadin Johnson and Shane Clemon all recorded pins in their matches.
Springfield 33-New Ulm 36
In the final match of the night, Springfield wrestled New Ulm (the “Battle of Brown County”). Although New Ulm is a AA school, it has always been a wrestling rival for years and both teams were excited to be able to compete against each other again. New Ulm jumped out to an early 24-6 lead, but the Tigers put a string of victories together to tie the match at 24-24. New Ulm recorded a pin at 170 lbs. to take a 6 point lead, but at 182 lbs., Kadin Johnson scored the winning takedown with five seconds left to keep the Tigers in the match. Mason Rummel received a forfeit at 220 lbs. to give the Tigers a 33-30 lead. At Heavyweight, New Ulm Senior Colby Wenninger was too much for sophomore Shane Clemon, recording the winning pin in the first period.
