Meals on Wheels program available for older adults

Did you know that Lutheran Social Service (LSS) of Minnesota provides a Meals on Wheels program in Springfield?  The service has actually been around for thirty + years.  Participation in the program is currently very low, with an average of only three meals delivered each day.

The LSS Meals on Wheels program is a vital service to support older adults aged 60 and older.  The program offers hot, nutritious meals delivered daily by local volunteers, ensuring that those who might be unable to leave their homes receive the care and support that they need.  Not only do the volunteers deliver meals, but they offer a safety check for the older adults, adding an extra layer of security for both the recipients and their families.  Sometimes a Meals on Wheels volunteer may the only person the recipient sees for the entire day.

The meals are designed by a registered dietician to provide variety and are carefully portioned with a balance of proteins, carbohydrates and spices to meet dietary needs.  Adjusted meals are available for individuals with special dietary needs, such as those who are diabetic or require a reduced sodium or vegetarian diet.  Each meal includes an entrée with vegetables, bread or dinner roll, fruit, dessert and milk.
