Riverside Park Softball Complex and Storm Shelter
Last Tuesday, October 28, a ribbon cutting was held during the open house for the Riverside Park Softball Complex and Storm Shelter. The Springfield Rotary Club, along with various community members toured the complex and asked questions.
The shelter is designed to hold 495 people with an air exchanger for ventilation. Along with the shelter, the complex features a concession stand, restrooms and shower facilities for campers at the park.
One of the major community contributors to the project was the Boettger Family Charitable Fund.
Roland ‘Rollie’ Boettger was born and raised in Springfield. After graduation from Springfield High School, he served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Rollie lived and worked the family farm. He was also the superintendent at the Springfield Golf Club. He loved baseball and played town team ball for Springfield and Comfrey. Rollie loved kids and developed the Boettger Family Charitable Fund that awards scholarships to graduating seniors. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield. He died in August of 2016.
