She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1956. Shortly thereafter Shirley was married and moved to the New Ulm area. She was blessed with five children and was a devoted mother. Shirley spent approximately 25 years assisting with the family farming business. Eventually she took a job at Advertising Unlimited in Sleepy Eye, where she retired after 20 years of employment. Shirley was an artistic and creative lady who enjoyed drawing, sewing, cooking and baking contests.
