Carlos Knakmuhs, 81, of Marshall, formerly of Walnut Grove, died Sunday, June 12, 2016 at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall.
Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at the United Methodist Church in Walnut Grove. Burial was in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Carlos Leon Knakmuhs was born on January 22, 1935, to Gideon and Erma (Jackson) Knakmuhs in Holly Township, Murray County, Minnesota. He graduated from Walnut Grove High School in 1953. Carlos served in the Army following graduation and a year of work beginning in July 1955. He was honorably discharged in July 1958 with the rank of PFC E5 and earning his Expert Carbine Badge. During his tenure in the army, Carlos served in Kaiserschlatern, Germany. He married Jean Moe on April 2, 1982 at the United Methodist Church in Springfield. They had two children, son, Dustin, and daughter, Jamie. Carlos was a life-long farmer and loved his work. He raised purebred Suffolk sheep for many years and fed cattle, as well. Carlos was called upon by many neighbors to assist with a difficult lambing or advice on livestock. He enjoyed horses, both riding and driving them. Dozens of foals were born and raised on the Knakmuhs farm during their marriage. Carlos also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and hunting. He played solitaire on his computer with a passion and although he liked cats, he would never admit it. His favorite companion was Buddy, his little house dog. Carlos was very creative and usually had a solution when someone needed something fashioned from raw materials. He was most proud of his children.
Carlos is survived by his wife, Jean of Marshall; children, Dustin of Walnut Grove and Jamie (Joe) Zimmerman of Marshall; siblings, Evelyn Hanish of Jeffers and Iola Hanson of Slayton; sister-in-law, Verona Knakmuhs of Walnut Grove; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harley and Robert; and brothers-in-law, Bill Hanish and Myrl Hanson.
