SCT Musical is really "Comedy Tonight"

Something familiar,

Something peculiar,

Something for everybody:

Comedy tonight!

Something that’s gaudy,

Something that’s bawdy—

Something for everybawdy

Comedy tonight!

No royal curse, no Trojan horse,

And a happy ending, of course!

Goodness and badness,

Panic is madness—

This time it all turns out all right!

Tragedy tomorrow, Comedy tonight!

This opening number “Comedy Tonight” (lyrics and music by Stephen Sondheim) sung by the entire cast of Springfield Community Theatre’s summer musical A Funny Thing  Happened on the Way to the Forum really tells the theatre-goer what they can expect on stage.  Instead of introducing the audience to the characters or putting the plot in motion, the song seeks only to tell the audience what kind of show they are about to see.  The song is a “litany of quick, descriptive rhymes (erratic / dramatic, convulsive / repulsive, surprises / disguises) that set the mood for what is about to happen.”  The catchy tune stays with the theatre-goers long after the performance has ended.

Rehearsals are in progress for Forum, scheduled to go on stage August 4, 5 and 7 in the Performing Arts Center at Springfield Public School.  Watch for ticket information in upcoming issues of the Advance-Press.
